Course Descriptor
This is a new Senior Course to be offer to S5/6 pupils ONLY!
The course shall be made up of 5 Units at SCQF Lvl 5. There are 3 mandatory units which are Workshop Practice, Carcase Making, Timber Frame Construction, and 2 optional units which include Furniture Veneering: An Introduction and Furniture Polishing: An Introduction.
The NPA Lvl 5 Furniture Manufacture course is a Unit only course with no end of year final assignment or exam like the Practical Woodwork and Metalwork courses. By completing the 3 mandatory and 1 of the optional units from the list above equates to the same SQA tariff points of a National 5 course award.
Minimum entry requirement for the course - A or B in National 5 Metalwork or Woodwork. All other entries should be discussed with Mr Dobie (FH) in CDT.
The course consists of producing larger scale projects to allow the pupils develop new skills and to explore the use of different more complex joint work and techniques within the context of furniture making. Pupils will be expected to be able to produce high quality pieces of furniture and use machine tools accurately to shape and finish models.
Pupils shall cover the main types of woodworking construction with units consisting of carcase and frame jointing with veneering and machine tooling incorporated into these units.

- Continual assessment with competence in the use of the machine and equipment being assessed throughout the year.
- Each unit shall contain paper work and practical aspects that shall need to be done to an acceptable level before the unit shall be achieved by the candidate. |

What Help Is Furniture Manufacture Lvl 5 After School?
Many of the skills within this course are directly applicable within the construction industry with the practical and health and safety aspects of the course being attractive skills for those wanting to progress within the industry. The skills would also allow those that are wanting to pursue furniture design, engineering design and cabinet making as a career. The practical skills will also help teach life long skills that will help individuals with renovations, building etc. within their lifetime.
