Course is practical, exploratory and experiential in nature. It combines elements of practical metalworking techniques and standard practice with elements of creativity.
The Course allows learners to gain a range of practical metalworking skills and to use a variety of tools, equipment and materials. It allows them to plan activities through to the completion of a finished product in metal.
The Course will also give learners the opportunity to develop thinking, numeracy, and employability, enterprise and citizenship skills.
The aims of the Course are to enable learners to develop:
This workshop based Course provides an opportunity for learners to develop generic and practical skills suited to a number of engineering disciplines.

- skills in measuring out and marking metal sections and sheet materials
- safe working practices in workshop environments
- practical creativity and problem-solving skills
- a knowledge / understanding of sustainability issues in a practical metalworking context

COURSE CHANGES
As of 2017-18 SQA have made some changes to the National 5 metal work course. These changes include:
- Course Assignment is worth 70 Marks
Course award is split: Question paper - 30%
Assignment - 70%
As of 2017-18 SQA have made some changes to the National 5 metal work course. These changes include:
- The removal of course units. However pupils will still need to complete the course work throughout the year to ensure they are gaining the correct knowledge, understanding and practical ability to then complete their course assignment to the required standards.
- The introduction of an end of year written question paper will now be apart of the course to assess the pupils knowledge and understanding of the metal work course.
- A new course assignment will now be issued to pupils by SQA each year.
- The overall course award is now determined by completing the course assignment and the question paper.
- Course Assignment is worth 70 Marks
Course award is split: Question paper - 30%
Assignment - 70%
There are no changes to the National 4 course.
- Pupils are still required to complete and pass all course units
- Pupils still have an added value project to complete
- National 4 pupils have NO EXAM
